Review by Bootleg Encyclopedia Spectacular
is a spectacular document of the fourth date on the Magic European tour.
Wardour use the same tape source that has been floating around for many
years and was made by a noisy bunch of Brits who traveled to Paris and is
identifiable by the "Tarzan" yells and belches at the very
beginning of the tape before "One Vision". Their
conversations ruin the beginning of an otherwise excellently recorded
acoustic set ("Love Of My Life" and "Is This The World We
Created?"). On the whole the powerful PA is able to drown them
out and is enjoyable. Some parts of the tape are more distorted
than others for reasons unexplained (like "A Kind Of Magic"
sounds fuzzy) and there is the wave effect of sound due to taping in an
outdoor arena. Wardour sounds louder and much brighter than
the tape that is currently in circulation and might be very close to the
original tape. The June 14th Paris gig was the fourth on their final
tour and the first of two in France. The second would come two weeks
after this on July 30th in Frejus. The Hippodrome De Vincennes is a
sixty thousand seat capacity arena and was a sell out with possibly every
one of them audible somewhere on this tape. Three
bands, Belouis Some, Level 42, and Marillion opened the event for Queen.
Since it is an early date on the tour Freddie's voice is in very
good shape unlike how it is when they hit London. The tape
picks up before the taped intro to "One Vision" and "Tie
Your Mother Down" follows. Customarily Freddie
performed his "call-and-response" game with the audience before
"Under Pressure" but on this night he has two. The
first is right after his opening "good evenings" based upon
his "yeahs!!" The second is before "Bohemian
Rhapsody" based upon his "day-os" and ending with his
"fuck you!" ("You were supposed to say 'fuck you'
back!"). Brian May gets a bit lost in the
instrumental section of "A Kind Of Magic". Afterwards
Freddie says,
"Where
is this, is this Paris? How about you in the back, you okay?
This song is called...'Under Pressure'". The impromptu and
guitar solo sections leading into "Now I'm Here" sound shorter
than usual. The second half of the show after the oldies
is standard ending with "Crazy Little Thing Called
Love". There is a cut in the tape between this and the
first encore "Radio Ga Ga" and another cut before the second
encore. The bonus dvdr is titled Visions De Paris and is a single camcorder shot in color close to the stage. The sound is excellent but the jostling of the audience makes it very hard to watch. There are long sections where the camera is trained upon darkness or upon John Deacon. Even when it is focused upon the action on stage it is so jumpy it is apt to cause a headache. Other audience videotapes like Vienna and Newcastle are poor but this is the worst. It is unwatchable. It is however a free bonus so there is no need to complain too much! The main attraction is the audiotape and it is worth having. Spectacular is Wardour's second release from the Magic tour joining the Newcastle tape on One Sweet Moment issued last March. Given the rarity of this tape and general rarity of boots from this tour Spectacular is worth having. (GS)
